Cloisonne, an ancient metalworking technique, is a multi-step enamel process used to produce jewelry, vases, and other decorative items, and the resulting objects can also be called cloisonne.
Cloisonne first developed in the Near East. It spread to the Byzantine Empire and from there along the Silk Road to China. After a processing breakthrough of cloisonne manufacture technique,in time cloisonne became popular among the common people in China, their favorite cloisonnes called "Jingtai Blue".
Chinese cloisonne is arguably the most well known of all the varieties of cloisonne and enamel making, and sometimes Chinese cloisonne confused with Canton enamel, a similar type of enamel work that is painted on freehand and does not utilize partitions to hold the colors separate.
Cloisonne manufacture is comprehensive and sophisticated, combining the techniques of making bronze and porcelain ware, as well as those of traditional painting and sculpture, and cloisonne process can be divided into following steps:
1. Body-making: forms metal (such as copper, bronze, or silver) into the shape of the finished object.
2. Filigree-soldering: use pure silver wire to bent into shapes that define the colored areas.
3. Enamel-filling: use enamel elements like boric acid, saltpetre and alkaline to fill the little compartments separated by filigree.
4. Enamel-firing: putting the article to the crucible with enamel fillings.
5. Polishing: use hard carbon to polish for some lustre on the surface.
6. Gilding:smoothly and evenly gilded in fluid of gold or silver and electroplated.
Today cloisonne technique is associated with the sculpture of wood, jade, ivory and lacquer. Cloisonne art is exported to many countries as a favorite medium for ornaments.
